So Long Santa Cruz
June 4th 2006 by Sean in impressionz, santa cruzin'So long Santa Cruz! I choose not to live in the past so you will not be missed, but I did enjoy many moments (well, maybe I’ll miss your beaches.)
Went downtown for some Santa Cruzin’ last Friday. Had a couple of beers at 99 and headed out for the Pacific Ave street scene. Walked up and down to see what I would see. While walking by the New Leaf organic food store a goth girl and her boyfriend dressed in an all black rubber Dune looking suit with some sort of gas mask on his head jangled by. No, it’s not halloween. Next, a woman with her hair done up very fancily and a shiny silver top with maximum cleavage showing walked by. She smiled at me.
I got to the end of the street and decided to head back, surprised I hadn’t seen the Pink Guy with his pink leggings, umbrella and unchanging grin. On the way back I stopped at the piano player with his portable piano built into a Costco style wheeled shopping cart and top hat on. He was playing some Scott Joplin ragtime. A car drove by with the windows rolled down and some bass-thumping hardcore rap playing with the volume turned up all the way. Nice contrast.
Time to walk again. Passed the guy who creates his spray-painted sci-fi scenes in live performances. That guy is dedicated and I like his work. I started getting hungry and decided to stop in Pizza My Heart. Got two slices and looked for a place to sit down. All the booths were taken. Some of the other booths had a bench available, but I decided to sit in one with a homeless guy who had a fishing hat on that said Cum Togater. The u had kind of been changed to an o. He also had on a white jean jacket and strange scarf with many scraps of cloth tied together. The end of it was a cut up pair of pink jogging pants. I sat down and after a bite we started chatting. He told me he had manic depression and it was obviously debilitating, but we had a coherent conversation. We talked about politics, the judicial system, spirituality, left-handed Tantra, compassion and benefiting people as opposed to helping them. I finished my pizza and wished him well.
Up further on the street a couple of cop cars had their lights flashing and one came on the loud speaker Is there a problem here? I walked faster to see what was going on. It seemed that a couple of guys I often see walking around downtown had gotten into a heated argument. Keepin’ tha peace. That was it for Friday. Some of my favorites weren’t out that night, but all in all a wonderful evening downtown.
