I think the basic human impulse is survival. Of course humans are much more complex than animals and so the perceived requirements for survival are different. But, if you examine society, a lot of the emphasis is subliminally an overtly survival oriented. Especially in advertising and media. It is very rare to find a being who is completely unconcerned about survival and who is simply being.

that’s because we are taught not to be that way, however inadvertently sometimes, by our parents.
and then it’s all reinforced by fear promoted by the media.
